Support system:
One of the most important steps in healing from abuse and trauma, is to find a support system. Which is not always easy. Abusers typically find ways to isolate their victims, in an effort to make it harder for them to leave. And unfortunately, it works.

Whether you are feeling alone because you moved somewhere away from your friends and family…. Whether your friends and family gave up trying to help you because you’d always go back and make excuses for your abuser…. Whether you went through the foster care system and just don’t have family to help you…. Or maybe it is your family who are the abusers.

No matter where you are, there are others who have gone through similar circumstances. Find a support group in your town or surrounding cities. Dialing 211 (in the United States) is a great way to find domestic violence and/or sexual assault support. The operator can give you the phone numbers of organizations nearby who can help you. Courthouses, police stations and even libraries can help you find support. You just need to be willing to reach out.

It’s ok to use your voice to ask for help! Many others have taken that step forward on their own path to healing and are honored to be there for you on yours.
